About Cathal
I am a Leaving Certificate student based in Kinsale, Cork that loves rugby, golf, math, reading and art. I received a distinction in my Junior Cycle math, didn’t receive below 96% in any test during my Junior Cycle and I reached the national finals of the Pi Quiz. I have also represented my school at a number of different mathematics competitions. Since I am just “one step” above Junior Cycle students I am able to connect with students more deeply and understand the real-life problems that they face, not just in relation to studies. I can connect with students far better than extremely qualified individuals as I have only recently progressed past the student’s stage and understand what it is like to be in their shoes.

I believe in tailoring each lesson to the individual student. Students can be from 1st to 3rd year studying any level of math. Lesson times can range from 30 minutes to 2 hours based on the student’s desire. I teach math as a skill rather than the common lecturing method taught in schools and I use a hands-on approach. In my lessons I explain key concepts and methodology before giving the student questions that we do together. Through this approach the student learns from their mistakes, leading to a much deeper understanding of the topic. I then provide questions and problems for students to solve between lessons, they can complete as many as they want, above the set minimum number of questions. As I am just a step above Junior Cycle students I recognize the realistic challenges that students face that might be overlooked by more professional teachers, such as assuming knowledge of basic concepts. I have taught over ten of my fellow students in my own year and now I want to transfer these learnings to the next generation.
