About Marisa
I am Marisa, a proud Brazilian with a lifelong love for words, stories, and human connection. Growing up surrounded by the richness of Brazilian Portuguese, I developed an early fascination with how language shapes the way we see the world. My curiosity naturally led me to explore Spanish, and through it, I discovered new rhythms, expressions, and ways of thinking. For me, learning languages isn’t just about communication, it’s about opening doors to different cultures, perspectives, and histories. I am passionate about sharing that joy with others, because I know how empowering it feels to truly connect with another person in their own language. Literature, music, and conversation are my windows into the soul of a culture, and I love guiding others to experience that same sense of discovery. Whether it’s discussing a moving novel, understanding the cultural nuances behind a phrase, or simply enjoying a chat in a new language, I believe every moment of learning should feel alive and meaningful.

My tutoring approach is interactive, supportive, and tailored to each student’s goals. I believe that language learning is most effective when it is immersive and enjoyable, so I combine conversation practice, grammar support, cultural exploration, and literature to create engaging lessons. I adapt my teaching methodology to the individual — whether they learn best through structured exercises, storytelling, or real-life dialogue practice. I often use authentic materials such as short stories, song lyrics, and news articles to bring the language to life. A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, although I can adapt to shorter or longer sessions depending on the student’s needs. I always ensure that each class has a balance of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with plenty of opportunities to practise and receive feedback in a relaxed, encouraging environment. I hold an A* in Portuguese and an A in Spanish at A-Level, as well as Grade 9s in both languages at GCSE. I am deeply passionate about the cultures and literatures of the Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking worlds, drawing inspiration from authors such as Jorge Amado and Gabriel García Márquez. My lessons are suitable for learners of all ages, from complete beginners to advanced students preparing for exams or seeking to improve their fluency for personal, academic, or professional reasons. I have experience supporting school students with coursework and exam preparation, as well as working with adult learners who want to explore a new language for travel or cultural interest.
